We are in the process of building our dreams into reality by turning our home into a sanctuary for a variety of amazing souls, most of which we have been fortunate enough to spare from the horrors of slaughter bound trucks.

Misfit Ranch is focusing on care, rehabilitation and positive training of our rescued donkeys and mules.   We offer a unique experience with educational opportunities to our community and youth groups.

We are building and learning every day along side these magnificent creatures and want to share our growth and experiences and their individual stories with our community.  Most of the donkeys and mules we have rescued were not rescued because they were the calmest in the pen.  These animals were not the perfect mannered party horses, they are not the reliable trail rides that we scooped up because they were done with their summer job and considered no longer necessary to the camps.  There are many MANY of those equine that do end up in kill pens and DO go onto trucks bound for slaughter, there are no "nice" trips to an auction for these animals.  However some are far more likely to be scooped up by a rescue to be adopted out or purchased by a private buyer to be spared from the final haul to borders.  The mini's, the mammoths, the flashy "zonkeys" which are hybrid zebra/donkey crosses are tagged for auction because they bring in money.  For the rest, they stand a far higher chance to become part of the estimated 4.8 million donkeys across the world slaughtered for their hides.

Here at Misfit, we have chosen to focus on the least "lucky" of the kill-pen, auction, feedlot beasts, those back lot donkeys. These are the ones with no chance given to be rescued, those left in the back not considered good enough for auction tags, those that were waiting in the direct ship lot for the next Mexican or Canadian bound slaughter truck without a hope.  Predominately standard donkeys, but we have acquired almost an equal number of mules as well.  These were the ones that were considered too small to be useful, too old to work or hurt.  Most so broken in some fashion whether it be in spirit or physically by the failure of their prior humans, they were considered no further use.

Some have a long road to recovery ahead of them due to years of neglect, but all have made tremendous improvements along side their new herd mates.

Some may take years to overcome years of neglect and abuse, but here they have years to do so.  The important part for us is today they thrive.  Thank you for your interest in Misfit Ranch- Bad Ass Sanctuary.  Follow our journey to learn more about these amazing creatures!
