Mission Statement

At Misfit Ranch-Bad Ass Sanctuary, Inc., our mission is dedicated to at-risk, neglected, abandoned, and abused donkeys and mules primarily from abandonment situations, high kill auctions and in some cases owner surrenders. Dedicated to the care and rehabilitation of those we are fortunate enough to rescue and providing educational opportunities to our youth and community on these magnificent beasts. Through hands on work as a volunteer or just visiting the farm you will learn about their history, abilities, and the horrible conditions all to many endure and each on our property have their own story to tell. By providing educational opportunities and up close and personal interactions, we hope to increase awareness of the gentle and intelligent nature of these animals and the horrific conditions that so many of them suffer. In New England horses are much more popular and common knowledge, so it is our pleasure and passion to introduce the specific needs and surprising abilities of the lesser well known donkey! We hope to foster new generations of donkey lovers and help reduce future cruelties through these efforts.

Our mission at the sanctuary will not focus on adoption (special circumstances may occur). Misfit Ranch will act as a sustainable haven for our current donkeys (and others) with a forever home, ongoing veterinary care, farrier care, food, shelter, positive training and loads of love. Although still under construction, we hope to start opening our doors in 2020 for events (youth, community and eventually therapy) and visitation in the hopes that with support and our community a few more can be saved.

Our primary focus is donkeys as they have stolen our hearts and we just adore these highly intelligent, hysterically comical, amazingly empathetic, wonderful creatures we are blessed with sharing our farm with.

We are in process of creating an environment in which our donkeys can live in the closest to natural habitat that we can provide here in NH. They have a large packed dry lot to rest, run and play and we are creating a roaming pasture for the donkeys via trails round the lush pastures in which the cows will graze spring-fall. The Donkeys have unrestricted access to full barn shelter to endure our New England winters, as well as ability to get out of summer sun while having free rein to roam outdoors any time, and as a herd.

Our herd is comprised of donkeys & mules (and 2 retired cows) that have been rescued from various kill pens or directly off slaughter bound truck in one case. Many were abused or unhandled, a couple had seen homes and/or some training ... before they found themselves confused, scared and crammed in a packed trailer being sent to feed lot to await slaughter trucks. Starved (half have arrived with a body score of 1-2), mistreated, incredibly depressed and in poor health, these Misfit fur babies are here and healing wonderfully. Some have a long way to go to regain health and trust and others are flourishing with new found herd mates and humans alike.  We are a very unique open barn environment (stall free) that fosters their own natural hierarchy and migration patterns.

We have built some tremendous bonds and had many milestones with their physical and mental health and look forward to introducing them to our community and bringing them the rest of the way!

We hope with support of our community through this awareness we can make a difference not only for many more donkeys here, but hopefully gain more support for species as a whole!
